About Butler
Butler University is a private liberal arts school located in Indianapolis, IN. It was founded in1855 by Ovid Butler, attorney and abolitionist. He opened the school on the principle that everyone deserves an excellent education, regardless of race or gender. This was a bold idea in pre-Civil-War America.

Butler University Athletics are members of the Big East Conference (NCAA Division 1) and Pioneer Football League (Division 1 FCS). Butler offers 18 varsity sports. These sports include: men’s / women’s basketball, men’s / women’s soccer, men’s / women’s tennis, men’s / women’s golf, men’s / women’s cross country, men’s / women’s track & field, baseball, softball, volleyball, women’s lacrosse, women’s swimming, and football. 17 of those sports are members of the Big East Conference while 1 is a member of the Pioneer Football League. Interestingly, the sports in the Big East Conference all offer athletic scholarships while the sport in the Pioneer Football league does not. Academic scholarships are usually offered to those athletes.

Neal Smith came to Butler as business manager in the fall of 2011 after spending time as a volunteer in the athletics department. Smith was promoted to Assistant Athletics Director for Facilities and Events in April 2013. He coordinates and communicates all scheduling of Butler University athletic facilities and events.
Smith is originally from Muncie, IN. He graduated from Notre Dame with bachelor's in business and a master's in business administration the following year. Smith spent 24 years in the investment arena with his last stint being 17 years as a portfolio manager with Goelzer Investment Management.
Smith has also been a model citizen in his community. He has been a big brother in the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization for more than 25 years. He also has served on the board of Big Brothers of Indianapolis and the Foundation of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana.
