There are 6 teams that make it into the Big East Soccer Championship Tournament. The 6 teams that made it in the 2016 tournament include: DePaul Blue Demons (6th seed), Xavier Musketeers (5th seed), Creighton Bluejays (4th seed), Villanova Wildcats (3rd seed), Butler Bulldogs (2nd seed), Providence Friars (1st seed). On November 6 the first round matches were played. #4 Creighton played #5 Xavier and #3 Villanova played #6 DePaul. Creighton defeated Xavier 3 – 1 and Villanova defeated DePaul 3-1 due to penalty kicks (PK’s) after the 2nd overtime.
Yesterday the semifinal matches were played. #1 Providence played #4 Creighton and #2 Butler played #3 Villanova. Creighton defeated Providence 2 – 1. Butler defeated Villanova 1 – 0 in the 2nd overtime. It was a dominating performance from both defenses or some would say a stagnant performance from both offences until 3:30 in 2nd OT. A header from #20 David Goldsmith was the winning goal. The senior forward was selected Co-Offensive Player of the Year and All-Big East First Team for 2016. On a side note, other Butler players received Big East honors as well. Honors include: Jared Timmer (All-Big East First Team), Mitch Ostrowski (All-Big East Second Team), Isaac Galliford (Big East All-Freshman Team), and Lewis Suddick (Big East All-Freshman Team). The win was a team effort and this is a talented Butler team. They will need an even greater team effort to win the Big East Soccer Championship. Butler and Creighton will play the championship match on Sunday, November 11. I intend to be there. Stay tuned. GO DAWGS!!!!
