Earlier today we had our weekly Tuesday meeting. As usual we discussed the upcoming events for the week, roles for each event and any comments or questions that anyone may have. The events for this week include: on Tuesday {9/13/16} women’s Butler soccer vs IUPUI Jaguars @7 PM, Butler volleyball vs Indiana State @ 6 PM, Friday {9/16/16} Butler volleyball vs Northern Kentucky Norse @ 11 AM, Arizona Wildcats vs Northern Kentucky @ 3 PM, Butler volleyball vs Loyola Ramblers @ 6 PM, Cathedral HS football vs St. Xavier HS @ 7:30 PM, Saturday {9/17/16} Arizona vs Loyola @ 11 AM, Loyola vs Northern Kentucky @ 3 PM, Butler volleyball vs Arizona @ 6 PM, and Indy Steelers pee-wee football @ 8:30 AM – 7:30 PM. It looks like it’s going to be another long Saturday.
I had the same roles for tonight’s women’s soccer game against IUPUI. As you may know I’m an alumnus of IUPUI but they sure don’t have any luck winning against Butler. The lady Bulldogs defeated the Jaguars 3 – 0. It was another good win for Butler. They are on a roll now. On a side note Butler volleyball defeated Indiana State 3 – 1. I love volleyball. Well until next time, God bless. GO DAWGS!!!

Yesterday was the longest day that I have spent at Butler University thus far. I got there early AM and didn’t leave late PM. I was in charge of overseeing parking. ESG security would work the parking lot and I would make sure things were running smoothly. I had to make sure that they had enough parking passes. With that, I had to monitor how many passes that I provided for book keep purposes. I also handled the cash including cash drops and cash pick-ups. As it got closer to game time the parking lot became more and more crowded. It was full of fans from both teams that were tailgating, playing music, drinking, mingling, and just overall having a good time. For a smaller school it was pretty live out there. It got busy at times because the Butler Classic Volleyball Tournament was going on and I had to be host to the visiting football team. Franklin, the visiting team brought 3 busses full of players. I mean they brought everybody totaling out at about 130 players and coaches combined. I showed them to their locker room and got them credentials for the press box, which I had to get back after the game. Once the game started my work with the parking lot were done. I had to collect the remainder of the money and parking passes to take inventory. Butler made a good chunk of change just from parking alone. I then handed the money over to Alex Perry, assistant athletic director of business operations. After that I watched the game with my fiancé and my son. It was nice. That’s a perk that I have as an intern. I can get people free parking passes and tickets to athletic events. I had to get back to work if they called me over the radio. I also was still the visiting teams host so I took care of my duties with them at halftime and end of the game. It was a great night for football and a great day for an intern, even though it was long.
Saturday night was Butler’s first home game of the season. They played the Franklin Grizzlies. The Grizzlies were coming off a big win whereas the Bulldogs were coming off a loss. However, the day would belong to the dawgs. Butler defeated Franklin 59 – 14. It was a great win to rejuvenate the team. Next week Butler plays an away game against Taylor University. Well, until next time, be blessed. GO DAWGS!!! Tonight the Butler women’s soccer team took on the Indiana State University Sycamores. This game was deemed a redemption game against ISU because last Saturday the Sycamores defeated the Bulldogs 41 – 25. Therefore, it was up to the lady dawgs to get the win. They succeeded in that effort. The Butler defeated the Sycamores 3 – 0. Two goals were score by #7 Serina Kashimoto and one goal by #12 Halle Stelbasky. It was good to see the ladies get the win.
I was the host and the scoreboard operator again. Some good news is that the scoreboard was up and running again so I didn’t have to use the portable scoreboard on the field. People thought we would have weather delays but we didn’t. Tonight was a good night. Well until next time, be blessed. GO DAWGS!!! Today we had a detailed meeting about the 2016 Big East Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament which will be hosted at Butler University this year. This event is scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend. Tania Kennedy, director of championships for the Big East ran the meeting. We went over the Big East Volleyball Championship Agenda, Big East Manuel and Guidelines, Host Operations Manuel, NCAA Rules, Participant Manuel, and Television Contract. Some of the topics presented in the meeting included:
GO DAWGS!!! Yesterday, we had our weekly meeting. I was more in-depth this time due to the fact that we are hosting 7 events this week. The event scheduled are: Thursday (9/8/16) W soccer vs Indiana State Sycamores @ 7 PM, [Butler Classic Volleyball Tournament] Friday (9/9/16) Butler volleyball vs Tennessee State Tigers @ 11 AM, Murray State Racers vs Wright State Raiders @ 2 PM, Butler volleyball vs Murray State @ 6 PM, Saturday (9/10/16) Wright State vs Tennessee State @ 2 PM, Butler volleyball vs Wright State @ 6 PM, and Butler football vs Franklin Grizzlies @ 6:30 PM. Neal didn’t mention anything to me about help with volleyball events so I will not be involved in the volleyball events to my knowledge. I will be focused on the soccer and football. First there was a big group meeting. That went well. Everyone was filled in on the events taken place and what their roles would be for each event. Questions were asked and statements were made in order to ensure smooth operations. Unanswered or more detailed questions / statement would be answered later in smaller groups. That leads to the second meeting, the small group meeting. This meeting involved: Neal (facility & event manager), Alex (asst. facility & event manager, parking), Kathleen (spirit shop), Mike (associate athletic director / external operations), Pete (ticket manager) and I (the intern). The meeting was about Saturday’s double feature of events taking place. They were discussing the ticking situation involving the events. Football tickets cost $12 and volleyball costs $7. However, volleyball starts before football. Pete raised concerns about volleyball people seeking into the football game due to their facilities being so compact. The thing was if you purchased a football ticket you could watch volleyball for free but if you purchased a volleyball ticket you weren’t allowed to watch football for free. Butler doesn’t really have the means to stop people from roaming without causing an issue. Pete suggested raising the volleyball ticket to $12, like football. Therefore, you wouldn’t have to worry about volleyball people sneaking into football or people buying a volleyball ticket just to go to football in order to save $5, thus screwing the system. Alex agreed. I chimed in on occasion. Kathleen and Neal didn’t mind either way but there operations would be affected due to the outcome of this meeting. Mike was brought in. He didn’t like the idea of raising the volleyball ticket to $12. He felt that only a few people would take advantage of the system like that and if they did they would keep quiet about it in order not to get caught. In other words the damage would be minimal. Mike also suggested that the facilities be sectioned off a certain way to help minimize that from happening. However, the facilities are compact and their resources are minimal so there isn’t much they can do but I do think they can up with the best solution possible. I can say I was very intrigued by this discussion due to their different views and ideas on the situation. Lastly, the third meeting was between Neal and me regarding football. However, it was briefly interrupted by the concessions manager who had some questions that needed to be answered. Neal does a great job of listening to people fully and then responding in a way that satisfies everyone. Anyway, back to football. This would be my first football game at Butler. We went through step-by-step of what I would be responsible for, what to do, how to do it, and when to do it. It was very detailed and visual. I would assist Alex with parking management duties and then handle my host responsibilities which are way different from soccer. I have a checklist that I made notes on but I figure once it are started following I would get the handle of it. I’m not worried, I’m excited. Well until next time, be blessed. GO DAWGS!!!! This entry is a double feature. Yesterday the Butler men’s soccer team went against SIUE and today the women’s soccer team went against LSU. The men’s game was at night and the women’s was during the day. The weather was absolutely beautiful for both games. I’m glad the weather was good because I was on the field operating the portable scoreboard. The portable scoreboard had different controls than the main scoreboard but I caught on quick. The main scoreboard is still having issues. I don’t know when it will be fixed but I would like them to hurry up. However, I don’t mind being down on the field when the weather is nice. You get a better view and experience of everything that happens on the field when you’re down there. My role was pretty much the same besides the type of scoreboard that I used.
During the men’s game against SIUE there was a lot of trash talk, profanity, and just overall aggression. They pushed, grabbed, tripped, and bumped all night long. I guess that’s why I’ve notice more injuries in the men’s games. I found it more interesting than the actual game. However, the results of the game were Butler: 2 and SIUE: 0. It was a solid win for them. It’s a different game when watching the men and the women. The game was supposed to take place in Bloomington, IN not a Butler. The ladies were participating in a tournament and the winner of the game would be declared the champion. During the women’s game against LSU there was so much communication and control. There is still a high level of competitiveness and aggression but they are better to look at in my opinion. I can say I do enjoy them women’s games better. However, the men’s team seem like a more talented team overall. The ladies competed to the end but came up short. The results of the game were Butler: 1 and LSU: 2. I thought the game would go into overtime but the tigers scored a goal with two minutes to go in the game. I guess its back to the drawing board for the lady dawgs. Well until next time, be blessed. GO DAWGS!!!! Yesterday, I started the morning off with our weekly meeting. It was a fairly quick meeting. We discussed the events for the week. The events are listed as followed: Tuesday (8/30/16) men’s soccer vs IUPUI @ 7:00 PM, Saturday (9/3/16) men’s soccer vs SIUE @ 7:00 PM, and Sunday (9/4/16) women’s soccer vs LSU @ 1:00 PM. LSU match was an additional event that wasn’t initially supposed to take place at Butler University. However, LSU had some issues with their flight plans so the date and location was changed. Roles were quickly discussed and then the meeting was over.
That night the Butler Bulldogs took on the IUPUI Jaguars. I’m an alumnus of IUPUI. However, I’ve never been a sports fan of IUPUI mainly because they don’t have football. Therefore, it wasn’t really a big deal. The weather for this game was frustrating. We had two weather delays due to lightning. I felt like I would be there all night. On top of that the scoreboard was on the fritz so I had to use my smartphone to keep the time. Anyway, it was a good game. The final score was Butler: 4 – IUPUI: 2. Lewis Suddick #8 had a hat trick which means that he scored 3 goals. The rough part about sports is the hours. You tend to spend a lot of time away from your family. I know that part will remain a factor in the industry. I love sports and I love my family so I’ll figure out a way to make it work. Well until next time, be blessed. GO DAWGS!!! Yesterday the women’s soccer team played the Akron Zips. It was redemption Sunday as the lady Dawgs beat the Zips 2-0. Butler played aggressive all game whereas Akron played sloppy. I’m actually surprised that they didn’t score more. Maybe the weather played a factor. I was hotter than Satin’s toe nails out there. It was a 1 o’clock kickoff so the sun was beaming. I think it was around 95 to 100 degrees. The heat drains you. Plus, they played on the artificial turf and that turf retains heat so it’s hotter in the field. I stood on the field for a little while and the bottom of my feet seemed like they were on fire. I can only imagine what they players felt. During the game the officials call for a few hydration breaks. It was good to see the ladies win after their loss last Friday.
I had the same role in this game. However, I have a team now of 5 people working under me. They are Butler University students that help out in order to get paid. I’m slowly but surely climbing the ladder. Well, until next time, be blessed. GO DAWGS!!! On Friday night the lady soccer Bulldogs of Butler University took on the lady Hoosiers of Indiana University. It was kid’s night featuring an in-state rivalry. However, the night didn’t get off to a good start. There wasn’t supposed to be any rain or thunder storms Friday but right before both teams were about to take the field to warm-up it started to pour down hard with lighting striking and thunder clattering. Fans and staff gathered in Hinkle Fieldhouse. The rain drops were the size of marbles and when they made contact with something it seemed like a violent act. Lighting struck close to the Butler campus. At one point it seemed like we were caught right in the middle. When the thunder clapped it was super load, enough to frighten people, and the building seemed to rumble. The match was scheduled to start at 7 PM but it didn’t get start until about 8:10 PM. Time seemed to move so slow during the delay but I was glad that it didn’t last longer. This is my Friday night that we are talking about people.
My roles for this match were pre-game field set-up, host for the visiting team and officials, and operating the score board. Now, I handle the entire pre-game field set-up. I lock gates, open doors, put out signs, prep field, sweep area for things out of place, and anything else that Neal Smith can think of. I love it. Give it all to me I can handle it. I like hosting because it gives you a chance to mingle. I had the Hoosier ladies laughing at some of the silly stuff that I was saying. They were really nice. I love human interaction like that because I’m a very social person. It’s like I draw power from people around me. When the match began the play seemed sluggish at first. It picked up after a while. However, a goal wasn’t scored until close to the end of the second period. Indiana scored a goal off the unintended deflection of a Butler player. It all looked like a mistake. Players from both sides were surprised but one was happier than the other. The people in the press box called it a cheap goal but a goal is a goal. The Indiana Hoosiers defeated the Butler Bulldogs 1-0. This was their first win of the young season. The Butler ladies seemed disappointed but it’s a long season and they will bounce back. They play again today at 1 PM against the Akron Zips. Well, until next time, be blessed. GO DAWGS!!! Today was a simple day so I’m just going to check in with you’ll. We had a meeting to talk about the up and coming events. The Butler women’s soccer team has two events this week: Friday 8/26/16 @ 7 PM vs. Indiana Hoosiers and Sunday 8/28/16 @ 1 PM vs. Akron Zips. Special events will be held on both of those nights. It will be Youth Night for the Indiana match and Daddy Daughter Day for the Akron match. Both matches will let kids in free and have a little something special for the kids. I heard that Hink, the Butler mascot (actual bulldog), will be there. I have yet to meet him so I’m looking forward to it. I love dogs. We also talked about our roles, expected weather, and expected crowd numbers. It was a quick and efficient meeting. Well until next time, be blessed.
